Our technicians recommend programmable thermostats, because it’s estimated that programmable thermostats can cut approximately $180 from your energy bill annually, by reducing heating or cooling when you need it least. Using a programmable thermostat, allows you to adjust the times you turn on heating or air-conditioning according to a pre-set schedule. These settings can be stored and repeat by certain days or hours (six or more temperature settings per day), and can be manually overridden without cancelling a daily or weekly set program. By setting your thermostat back 10-15° for eight hours or more, you can save 5–15% a year on your heating bill. This is a savings of as much as 1% for each degree, if the setback timeframe is at least eight hours long.

A common myth associate with programmable thermostats is the belief that a furnace or air conditioner is forced to work harder than normal to warm a space back up or cool it down to a comfortable temperature after a thermostat has been set back. The fact is when your house drops below or above its normal temperature, it will lose energy to the surrounding environment more slowly. So, the longer your house remains at a lower temperature (or higher temperature if cooling), the more energy you save, because your house has lost less energy than it would have at the higher (or lower) temperature.

There are some exceptions and limitations for the use of programmable thermostats for homes with heat pumps, steam heat, radiant floor heat, or electric resistance heating.   I would give them 10 stars if I could! We had other contractors come in and tell us we needed a whole new ac unit for $5k-$20k when our ac stopped working.
